Racial Equity Book Group

First Presbyterian Church of Chicago has a multi-racial congregation that is focused on grace and justice. We read to learn more about each other and how we can serve those who need support.

Racial Equity Book Discussion Group (initiated and organized by Michelle Duster) meets quarterly, in person and via Zoom, to read and discuss non-fiction books by and about racial and ethnic minorities. We select books to coincide as closely as possible with the heritage months (African American, Arab American, Jewish American, Asian American Pacific Islander, Hispanic American and Native American). We choose both an adult book and a children’s book, making the information accessible to all age groups.

Additionally, in 2025, we read “The Anti-Greed Gospel”, a book which examines how some have used Christianity to negatively impact marginalized people. We started using this text to explore what people who practice the same faith with different interpretation can do to provide radical love, healing, and restitution. We’ve met monthly throughout 2026 and hope to continue this structure in future years, as One Church/One Book, a complement to our quarterly book discussions.

If you'd like to join a discussion please reach out here to let us know, and we'll add you to the email communication.
